Airplane Cockpit Videotaping
How to Make Videos while Flying

cockpit videotapingIf you opt to use a video camera with an external micorphone jack to record your conversation (which is recommended by the way), be sure to check your videocamera for a standard 1/8" mic jack. Some handycams and camcorders depending on brand and model, use a proprietary connector which limits you to using their external microphone. These camcorders present an additional problem when it comes to adding sound to your home aircraft videos and you may or may not be able to get them to work in conjunction with your airplane's intercom system. The next item needed is a patch cord. The intercom patch cord goes in line with your headset and has an 1/8" microphone plug for your video camera.

You have two options here.... There is a patch cord available from Aircraft Spruce selling for about $40.00 including shipping and handling (part number 13-01456). Their communication patch cord is actually pictured to the right. If you are feeling like that is too much to shell out for a little wire, you can make your own patch cord. Radio Shack actually should have all the components you'll need and all it will take it is some spare time and some soldering on your part if you'd like to save yourself some cash.

The camera can be held by a willing participant during flight. This is the most acceptable method, however a homemade camera mount can be easily assembled using a spring-loaded clamp to hold the camera still in the airplane. For those with professionalism in mond, a gyroscopic mount would be the way to go.

Remember to always fly safe and have fun making your cockpit videos for posterity. In-flight videos are always a great way to share the experience and freedom of general aviation with those who are unable or unwilling to fly. Please like us on Facebook, hit that tweet button, stumble us, and press the plus button to promote us using Google Plus, this will ultimately help share these techniques with other pilots. In the overall grand scheme of things, it will hopefully help general avaition to grow in popularity.
