Flying Lesson 11

Tonight's lesson was somewhat uneventful. It amounted to a whole lot of landing practice. It was an early evening lesson and the weather was perfect. There was no wind whatsoever, maybe 77 degrees Farenheit, and a blue sky. My instructor made it clear right from the start, it was a great night to practice landings. I won't bore you with the details at all. It was one landing after the next... following each takeoff, of course. We simply stayed in the pattern around the airport and repeated the same sequence. We also reversed runways and proceeded to practice landings and takeoffs in the opposite direction as well. This is where I need the most practice, so I was glad to keep trying. No matter what I do during these lessons, I always come away with something new. One important concept that remained with me after this lesson was that my instructor told me he'd rather see me come in toward the runway a little on the low side than on the high side. He said it would always be easier to add power at the last second using the throttle versus having to point the nose too far down... or worse yet possibly run out of runway before coming to a stop.

flight of plane I guess solo flight is around the corner and I need to be able to bring down the Cessna 172 back to earth in one piece, so practicing landings was a must. I feel much more confident on my approaches as well as on the actual touchdown. I remember distinctly being a little queasy about the landings when I first started my lessons. But with practice comes confidence and a more relaxed flying experience.

My next lesson is about four days away. By tomorrow, I'll be looking forward to my next experience.
