Flying Lesson 5
Lesson 5 came up quick. I had been looking forward to this week's flying lesson and I was hoping for some nice weather. It had very very hot and humid over the last few days and thunderstorms were in the forecast. I arrived at the airport promptly for my lesson and immediately made my way over to the plane and began the pre-flight inspection. After pausing to watch what appeared to be a clunker of an airplane pass by me on the runway, I boarded the plane and got ready for takoff. With fuel in the tanks and the instructor on board of course, we taxied over to the runway and proceeded to take off.
We began today's lesson with some slow flight and I felt I improved tremendously over last week's haphazard flight. My instructor commented on the im[provement which was a real shot-in-the-arm. We then climbed to 6,000 ft for more stalls. The slow flight stalls are still pretty shaky for me. The rutter seems sensitive when it comes to performing stalls at such a slow airspeed. I think I'll be practicing these for a while yet. My instructor then produced a pair of foggles from a little black bag he carried on board. Foggles are a pair of glasses that obstruct your view out the windhield and side windows and only let you see the instrumentation. That more or less look like foggy safety glasses. This was an exercise in instrument flying. It went very well in my opinion. We did some climbs, some descents, and turned a few different headings. I must have had these glasses on for about a half an hour.

We turned back to the airport to try a few landings. This is where I'm going to need some practice. I can feel myself tense up as I try to guide the plane down onto the runway. It's a bit stressful at this point. Our first attempt we came in very low, almost trimming some trees. We greased the runway, took off again, and tried another landing. This one was a little better but the instructor helped out a little more. I'm pretty sure that's why it was better.
